Staff in the division’s Academic Office undertake educational quality assurance work in conjunction with departments, faculties, and the central university, and provide dedicated graduate studies assistance to a number of the division’s units. The Office is also responsible for developing the division-wide research and skills training programme for doctoral students and for managing the funding and supporting the strategic development of the ESRC Doctoral Training Centre. There are three educationally-focused divisional committees that report to the Social Sciences Board, all of which are chaired by the Associate Head of Division (Education). These are the following:
QUALITY ASSURANCE COMMITTEE
The Quality Assurance Committee is the body with responsibility for reviewing detailed arrangements for the assurance of educational quality and standards, according to the QAA UK Quality Code for Higher Education. It normally meets twice per term and considers proposals from departments for regulation and examination convention changes, new initiatives (e.g. course proposals, assessment methods), and examiners’ reports. It is also reviews course material and programme development, and refers matters of general policy to Undergraduate and/or Graduate Studies Committee, as appropriate.

GRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE
The Graduate Studies Committee meets twice a term and considers issues of academic policy, teaching and learning, and information and resources as they relate to graduate students. It acts as a forum for discussion of areas of common interest and good practice, considers responses to consultations, and reviews division-wide graduate data in accordance with the University/Division’s Quality Assurance Calendars. The Committee also advises units on matters concerning QAA Higher Education Review and receives reports from the Social Sciences Doctoral Training Centre Management Board and Graduate Student Forum.
Membership of the Committee consists of one Director of Graduate Studies per department plus five members of the Teaching Audit Committee (ex officio), the Chair of the Doctoral Training Centre Management Board and the Divisional Board Graduate Student Representative. UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES COMMITTEE
The Undergraduate Studies Committee meets once a term and considers issues of academic policy, teaching and learning, and information and resources as they relate to undergraduate students. It acts as the undergraduate-focused forum for sharing good practice and discussing areas of common interest. In accordance with the University/Division’s Quality Assurance Calendars, the Committee considers units’ responses to academic policy consultations, advises on QAA Higher Education Review, and receives division-wide information for review including NSS results, KIS outputs and degree data.
Membership of the Committee consists of the Directors of Undergraduate Studies or equivalent for each degree, plus three members of the Teaching Audit Committee (ex officio), and the Divisional Board Undergraduate Student Representative.
