The ESRC Festival of Social Science is a national celebration of social science research, with over 350 events taking place across the UK and online.

Call for Expressions of Interest – closing date 8th June 2022

  • Are you a social scientist passionate about sharing your research with the public?
  • Are you interested in working with a fantastic cross-University team to deliver an inspiring public engagement event?
  • Are you available 29/30 October 2022 for an in-person event in Oxford? Or during November 2022 to run a standalone event, which could be online?

Then the Festival of Social Science could be for you!

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals or teams from across the O2RB partnership (University of Oxford, Oxford Brookes University, Open University and University of Reading) to lead an informative and entertaining event of their own as part of the nationwide ESRC Festival of Social Science.

You will be given full support to develop your idea and plan your activities, and funding is available. The theme this year is ‘our local area’ but this can be interpreted in many ways, so feel free to be creative! We welcome all kinds of ideas for events, to be hosted online or in person, from researchers at all career stages (including DPhils). The Expression of Interest form is intended to be light touch and we would love to hear from you, even if you only have the beginnings of an idea at this stage, or if you want to be involved but don't know where to start!

Many of our events will take place at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford over our main Festival weekend of 29-30 October 2022. However, events at different venues (including online) and on different dates will be considered. Please tell us what you have in mind and we'll explore possibilities.

Festival of Social Science 2022: what you need to know

Researchers who are interested in participating in the Festival are invited to attend a briefing session at the Pitt Rivers Museum 10:30-12:30 on Wednesday 18th May. You’ll hear from the SSD Research Impact and Engagement team, public engagement and research experts from the Pitt Rivers Museum and some of last year’s activity leads, plus have an opportunity to view the spaces that will be available to use during the Festival and discuss your initial ideas. Attendance is encouraged but is a not a requirement for submitting an Expression of Interest. Please come along even if you don’t yet know what kind of activity you might like to run. Attendance does not commit you to submitting an Expression of Interest. Information shared in the briefing session will be added to this webpage after the event, so that it is available for those who cannot attend in person.
