The Youth Initiative Programme (YIP), based in the Department of Education, brings together three donor-funded small-scale projects, all of which focus on finding out more about how school drop-out and exclusion may be prevented.

Exclusion in these projects includes formal disciplinary exclusion from school, persistent unauthorised absence and other processes of becoming ‘missing’ from education.

A series of recent reports have highlighted persisting inequalities in exclusions and non-compliance with statutory duties. Also a number of changes in education policies regarding pupils’ exclusion are currently underway emphasising the devolution of powers and responsibilities to schools creating new demands for the sector.

Why give?

At Oxford we provide the knowledge base and inspiration for new policies to address these challenges and to promote sustainability and social change and the preservation of human diversity and culture. Economists, sociologists, lawyers and political scientists hold offices in governments and leadership worldwide and policy makers turn to Oxford for research and advice.
