Neil MacFarlane, the Lester B Pearson Professor of International Relations, has been appointed interim Head of the Social Sciences Division. Professor MacFarlane will replace Professor Roger Goodman, who will be taking a new role as the sixth Warden of St Anthony's College.

The Academy of Social Sciences has announced today that it has conferred the award of Fellow on 47 leading social scientists, including two from the University of Oxford, John Haskey and Luciano Floridi.

The Social Sciences Division and the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology received two Public Engagement with Research (PER) awards at the Vice-Chancellor’s Inaugural PER Ceremony. The awards were for LiveFriday: Social Animals, an event held in 2015, which highlighted the depth and breadth of Oxford’s social science research and its impact on people's lives across the world.

The Division's seeking new proposals for research incubators aligned with the Global Challenges Research Fund themes (GCRF). The incubators will be led by academics with permanent academic/research appointments, interested in driving the development of interdisciplinary research collaborations with colleagues within and outside their own department at Oxford, and in other universities.

The University of Oxford has announced the appointment of Achim Steiner as the next Director of the Oxford Martin School, to take over from Professor Ian Goldin, who will step down later this year after ten years as founding Director. Mr Steiner will join the School on 1 September 2016 from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), where he has been Executive Director since 2006.

Two new research incubator themes, ‘Big data and human development’ and ‘Europe Unbound: geopolitics, economics and communication' were launched today. The aim of the incubators is to build on Oxford’s multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary strengths and strengthen the Division's collaborative research capacity in order to encourage the development of new, cutting-edge research.
