ESRC Doctoral Training Centre
Oxford hosts one of the UK’s 21 Doctoral Training Centres (DTCs) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). These Centres recognise national excellence in research and provide Research Council funding to support doctoral students in the Social Sciences. Oxford’s DTC offers around 60 studentships per year across 19 disciplinary and interdisciplinary pathways.
For UK students meeting the ESRC’s residency requirements, funding covers fees and provides a maintenance stipend. EU students meeting the ESRC’s residency requirements are eligible for fees-only awards. Certain types of awards (e.g. in Economics and for some projects using advanced quantitative methods) are available for UK, EU and overseas students.
The ESRC does not fund standalone masters programmes but can support routes to doctoral research that combines one- and two-year masters degrees with doctoral study. Awards are also available for students who have completed an ESRC-accredited masters programme or equivalent at another institution.
Oxford’s ESRC-approved doctoral pathways are:
- Economics and Social History
- Experimental Psychology
- Geography and the Environment
- International Development
- International Relations
- Language-based Area Studies
- Management and Finance
- Quantitative Finance
- Social Anthropology
