Appointment of Professor Timothy Power as Head of Division

The Social Sciences Division is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Timothy Power as Head of the Social Science Division to succeed Professor Dame Sarah Whatmore. The appointment has been confirmed by the University Council, and was formally announced on 7 June 2021.

Tim Power is Professor of Latin American Politics, current Head of the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, and a Fellow of St Antony’s. He has taught at Oxford since 2005 and is a member of the Department of Politics and International Relations as well the OSGA. Of his appointment, he says, 'As a researcher and teacher, it is a great privilege to be working within the most exciting community of social scientists anywhere in the world. I look forward to building on the immense achievements of Professor Dame Sarah Whatmore in fostering a creative, dynamic, and unified Social Sciences Division.'

Professor Power will take on the position from 1 October 2021. Professor Dame Sarah Whatmore will step down as Head of Division on 31 July, with Professor Margaret Stevens taking over on an interim basis, 1 August - 30 September.
