New Associate Head for Research and Impact joins Social Sciences Division

This month we are delighted to welcome Professor Louise Slater (School of Geography and the Environment) to her new role as Associate Head (Research & Impact) of the Social Sciences Division, in which she will provide strategic leadership for all aspects of research, impact, engagement and innovation in Social Sciences.

Professor Louise Slater

Professor of Hydroclimatology at the School of Geography and the Environment, and Fellow of Hertford College, Louise’s research focuses on river flooding, drought, and climate extremes. She edits the journals Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) and Earth’s Future, serves as a Science Officer for the European Geosciences Union and chairs the Scientific and Technical Advisory group on UK Flood Hydrology.

In her new role, Louise will lead the Social Sciences Division’s approach to strengthening research quality and diversifying funding for strategic research activities, as well as improving research culture and career pathways, and supporting engagement and innovation with a wide range of external partners to enhance research impact.

Professor Louise Slater says, 'I am excited to take on this new role, to support research across the Division, and to showcase the strength and impact of our work in the upcoming REF. I would like to extend my particular thanks to Professor Heather Viles for her exceptional leadership in the role over the past four years'.

Professor Slater takes up the mantle from Professor Heather Viles, who held the position from 2020-2024.
