A wide range of summer schools at the University of Oxford offer social sciences students and researchers the opportunity to gain invaluable skills, experience, and further their professional development. This summer, participants can learn from leading academics in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Law and The Refugee Studies Centre among many others.

Oxford University Business Economics Programme - Fundamental Economics

The OUBEP Summer Programme aims to develop future leaders by combining excellent academic tuition with industry-leading experts. Complete the programme remotely with online lectures-only option, or choose the enhanced programme and access the lectures online followed by a 5-day residential in Oxford in July.

Machine Learning in Macroeconomics | Department of Economics

An intensive three-day summer school course led by Prof Jesús Fernández-Villaverde covering the following topics: ‘Why Machine Learning in Economics?’, ‘Deep Learning’, ‘Reinforcement Learning’ and ‘Empirical methods in Machine Learning’.

Dates: 13-15 June 2022

Format: In-person at the Department of Economics, Oxford

Open to: Students and practitioners in Macroeconomics - aims to introduce participants to Machine Learning in Macroeconomics.

Summer Institute in Computational Social Science Oxford (SICSS-Oxford)

SICSS-Oxford is sponsored by Nuffield College (in conjunction with Said Business School and the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science). It brings together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and beginning faculty interested in computational social science. It is for is for both social scientists and data scientists.

Dates: 3-15 July 2022

Format: In-person

Open to: Participation is restricted to postgraduate research, doctoral and early career researchers (within 7 years of PhD completion).

Evidence-Based Health Care Summer School | Led by the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, and jointly run by the Department for Continuing Education

This unique experience offers: EBHC modules; non-accredited short courses; a selection of workshops and EBMLive 2022. The aim is to foster debate and engage with like-minded colleagues while offering additional learning relevant to evidence-based health care post pandemic.

Dates: 4-20 July 2022. Each event must be registered for individually

Format: In-person at Kellogg College, Oxford

Open to: EBHC students, supervisors, consumers, and leading evidence-based experts.

International Online School in Forced Migration

The Online School fosters dialogue between academics, practitioners and policymakers working to improve the situation of refugees and other forced migrants. It combines Oxford’s tradition of academic excellence with a stimulating discussion-based method of teaching, learning and reflection.

Dates: 4-8 July and 11-15 July (5-day course held twice)

Format: Online

Who can apply: The course is principally designed for policymakers and practitioners working on refugee protection and related issues, normally with several (usually at least 5) years of work experience.

Thinking Deeply About Law | Faculty of Law

The Law Faculty offers an intensive programme of university-level study in the law of England and Wales as part of the wider UK legal setting. Participants will be taught by an incredible team of internationally-recognised legal experts and gain a taste of the Oxford experience and what it might be like to study at an English university and to practice law in the UK.

Dates: 18-19 July 2022

Format: Online teaching, mixing lectures with small group work taking place in seminars and tutorials.

Oxford Economics Summer School | Department of Economics

Create your own tailor-made summer school experience by selecting courses in Applied Microeconomics, Macroeconomics or Econometrics. Combine morning and afternoon sessions from two different disciplines, or focus on a single field of interest. 

Dates: 12-16 September 2022

Format: In-person at the Department of Economics, Oxford, or live-streamed for those unable to attend

Open to: Ideal for both PhD students and researchers in Central banks or other international institutions. Advanced courses provide practical skills and build on knowledge, surrounded by likeminded economists.

Many departments across the division run regular spring and summer schools. The following have now closed for applications for 2022 but details about the type of courses they offer can be found online, including: School of Archaeology and the School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography, Department of Education, Department of Politics and International Relations and Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.
