Summer Schools for the Social Sciences in 2023

A range of summer schools at the University offer social sciences students and researchers the opportunity to gain invaluable skills, experience, and further their professional development, learning from leading academics across the division. Read on to discover the highlights of the programmes running in the Social Sciences Division this summer. 

Global Leadership Summer School 

The Global Leadership Summer School (GLSS) is a week-long version of flagship Global Leadership Initiative programme, helping Oxford postgraduates to grow as leaders of character and purpose. The aim of the GLSS is to develop participants' intellectual and practical understanding of what makes for good leadership in their context and put the learnings into practice as they go on their own leadership journey after graduating from Oxford. The week-long programme will help participants to grow as leaders who are both effective and ethical, who further the good of society and enable others to flourish. 

Dates: 26 June - 30 June 2023 

Format: All activities will take place at the Cheng Yu Tung building, Jesus College, except for a day-long retreat at Buscot Park on 28 June.   

Open to: Any postgraduate student enrolled in a full-time programme at the University of Oxford.

Summer SCENE – Summer Sustainability, Climate & Environmental Education 

Oxford Smith School is proud to launch its low-carbon, online summer school programme! The course aims to guide and encourage a youth audience from the Global South to collaborate in critiquing current sustainability policies. After exploring a range of sustainability topics, participants will be guided to develop a policy recommendation for world leaders, to be published at the end of the course. The programme provides participants with an opportunity to network in the sustainability space with peers from other Global South nations, student facilitators on current Oxford MSc courses, and learn from Oxford faculty and other experts in this field. 

Dates: 26 June to 7 July 2023 (Mon-Fri) 

Format: Online - live webinars

Open to: Graduate students and early career professionals from the Global South, who have an interest in policy development and/or have started their career in the third sector.

The Agile Initiative Summer School  

Connecting environmental research with policy: a pathway to real-world impacts. Our practitioners will share their expertise, train participants to build connections across disciplines and the science-policy divide, and lead practical group exercises on designing rapid cross-disciplinary research to meet urgent environmental policy needs. Participants will receive training to develop the skills needed to connect research with policy throughout the programme.  

Dates: 10 - 14 July 2023 

Format: In Person, Keble College 

Open to: UK-based researchers at post-doctorate, PhD, DPhil and MPhil levels whose research is actively engaged with both policy and environmental challenges.
