Fieldwork can be one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of a research project. The Division has an extensive programme of Fieldwork-related courses and support running from the planning stages all the way through to the post-Fieldwork return to Oxford. All draw heavily on the expertise of our researcher communities, bringing together people recently returned from fieldwork and those about to go, and offer ongoing networking and peer-support opportunities.

If you have recently returned from the field, you are warmly welcome to our fortnightly Fieldworkers' Sessions. A space for DPhil students returning from the field to share their experiences, learn what it means to translate fieldwork into academic results, and understand the value of qualitative methods in the social sciences and the wider world. If you would like additional support with the emotional dimension or consequences of your work, do have a look at our Vicarious Trauma resources and also explore what the Counselling Service or Occupational Health can offer
