Fieldwork can be one of the most rewarding and challenging aspects of a research project. The Division has an extensive programme of Fieldwork-related courses and support running from the planning stages all the way through to the post-Fieldwork return to Oxford. All draw heavily on the expertise of our researcher communities, bringing together people recently returned from fieldwork and those about to go, and offer ongoing networking and peer-support opportunities.
If you are thinking about future fieldwork, make sure you’ve checked out the Preparing for Safe Fieldwork and Insiders’ Guide to Fieldwork courses below.
If you’re about to return, or have recently returned, from the field, you are warmly welcome to our termly post-fieldwork retreat. It’s an opportunity to meet other researchers going through the same process as you and, together, to take a step back and think about the data you’ve collected, what comes next, and how to move forward with your project in a way that is both effective and kind to yourself. If you would like additional support with the emotional dimension or consequences of your work, do have a look at our Vicarious Trauma resources and also explore what the Counselling Service or Occupational Health can offer.
