Do you find it difficult to connect to the academic community in Oxford?
Would you like to join like-minded folks who understand the need to balance research with other life responsibilities?
Join the Part-Time Students Network, a new student-led community within the Social Sciences Division.
About the Network
Oxford is often described as a place of transitions, with many people coming and going with the seasonality of the terms. Researchers complete their courses, receive their qualifications, and when they are ready, leave the city and university behind to pursue their next goal.
Part-time researchers are in unique positions facing a diverse array of challenges when it comes to being embedded in the resources the university and division have to offer. The Part-Time Students Network (PTSN) aims to provide an online and offline space for researchers to exchange and build their knowledge bases, accessing resources no matter when and where they are. By way of hybrid events in panel and workshop formats and discussion forums, PTSN will support its members as they pursue a sustainable work-life balance and professional development. The ultimate goal is that members will feel they are part of an empathetic community.
About the Convenor
Peyton Cherry is a Postdoctoral Affiliate at the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography who recently completed their DPhil in Anthropology. Their research focuses on sexual consent activism and education in Tokyo, with broader interests in transnational social movements, such as #MeToo/#WeToo/#WithYou. While attending academic workshops in various countries and speaking with fellow students, Peyton observed that part-time students, especially those not residing in their university cities or on their campuses, often had drastically different experiences from their peers. Some individuals expressed isolation from or ambivalence towards their course because many activities were only tailored for full-time students. Peyton hopes that this network and community will begin to weave new connections between researchers, regardless of their background, discipline, and student status.
