Cumberland Lodge seeks to appoint a freelance Research Associate to support our forthcoming conference, ‘Shaping Social Mobility: Education & Employment’. This role will include researching and writing a pre-conference briefing document and a post-conference report summarising key recommendations for change. You will also be required to participate in a residential cross-sector conference in Windsor Great Park, an online consultation, and a central London report launch.

Despite efforts being made to level up the education system in the UK and increase the number of people from disadvantaged backgrounds in top jobs, social class continues to affect educational opportunities and has a lasting impact on career trajectories. The conference brings together a diverse delegation of academics, policymakers, young people and future leaders, business representatives, civil society and teachers to better understand the underlying issues around social mobility and rethink best ways to improve it from a cross-sector, interdisciplinary perspective. By convening people who are working on social mobility, as well as those with first-hand experience of facing challenges moving up, or down, the occupational ladder, the conference aims to inspire fresh thinking on how to promote equality of opportunity in education and the world of work, in terms of access and progression.

In this conference, we’ll discuss how we might need to shift our perception of social mobility and challenge the idea that it exclusively refers to movement in one direction – up. From a cross-sector lens, we ask: how has COVID-19 affected our perception of social mobility? Has our increased appreciation of key workers encouraged people to value jobs differently? How can we support people to pursue careers on the basis of pride, worth, enjoyment and work/life balance, rather than on prestige, family legacy, social class or tradition?
