Overview of the scheme
The Mid-Career Researcher (MCR) Incentives Pilot Scheme is a funding initiative launched by the Social Sciences Division to support MCRs in securing large research grants, defined as grants valued at £400,000 or more FEC (as defined by X5) and lasting three years or longer. This scheme provides targeted resources to help MCRs focus on grant applications and strengthen their research portfolios, thus supporting their academic progression. Refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section for more details on who classifies as an MCR.
The pilot scheme is expected to run until Summer 2026, funded through the UKRI Talent and Research Stabilisation Fund, with bi-annual application deadlines.
It is noted that some departments already operate internal incentives schemes to support MCRs to apply for large research grants. In such cases, funding may be directed to supplement existing departmental initiatives where the departmental schemes comply with the terms and conditions of UKRI Talent & Research Stabilisation Fund. In such scenarios, the departments must get in touch with the Senior Research Facilitator, Social Sciences Division.
Mid-Career Researcher (MCR) Incentives Pilot Scheme: Round 3
Round 3 of the Mid-Career Researchers (MCR) Incentives Scheme will open on 16 February 2026 via IRAMS, with a submission deadline of 18 March 2026. This will be the final round of the pilot scheme. The scheme was established to support mid-career researchers in developing competitive large grant applications and in securing their first independent research funding. We are pleased to report that, across the first two rounds, 20 MCRs have utilised the scheme. Several participants have already submitted large grant applications, while others are currently in the process of preparing theirs.
To ensure fairness across departments, we previously indicated an expected allocation of up to £25,000 per department. However, with the third and final round approaching, we will be revising the funding allocation approach slightly to maximise uptake and impact across the departments.
Round 3 of the Mid-Career Researchers Incentives Pilot Scheme will operate through two parallel application routes:
- First, departments that have not fully utilised their £25,000 allocation may submit applications up to their remaining balance; these will be assessed by the panel on eligibility only and funded in full where criteria are met.
- Second, any unspent funds across departments will be pooled into an open competition (e.g. accumulated leftovers forming a single pot), for which eligible applications will compete and be prioritised by the panel for funding. To support fair and transparent decision-making, departments will be required to rank their submissions before they are considered by the panel. For example, if one of the departments has a leftover of £11,000, while the other has a leftover of £2,000 – this will be combined to a pool of £13,000, for which all other department applications will compete.
